๐Ÿง Discovering Omarchy: A Developer’s New Favorite Linux Distro

I’ve spent most of my career hopping between ecosystems โ€” building .NET applications from WebForms to .NET Core, writing automation scripts, working with Linux servers, experimenting with security tooling, and occasionally breaking things on purpose in the name of learning.

At home, I’ve been a long-time Mac user. At work, Windows has been the daily driver.

But every once in a while, a Linux project comes along that makes me stop and think:

“Waitโ€ฆ what is this?”

Recently, that project was Omarchy.

At first glance, it looks like another Arch-based Linux distribution. And technically, that’s exactly what it is. But that description misses what makes Omarchy interesting.

Omarchy takes Arch Linux, the Hyprland tiling Wayland compositor, Quickshell, carefully selected applications, custom configuration, themes, and keyboard-driven workflows and packages them into one highly opinionated desktop experience.

And that word โ€” opinionated โ€” is probably the best way to understand Omarchy.

๐Ÿงญ What Even Is Omarchy?

Omarchy is an Arch-based Linux distribution designed primarily around developer productivity and a highly curated desktop experience.

Rather than giving you a completely blank Linux environment and asking you to assemble everything yourself, Omarchy makes many of those decisions for you.

It chooses:

  • The underlying Arch Linux base
  • Hyprland as the tiling window manager/compositor
  • A cohesive visual design
  • Keyboard-driven workflows
  • Default applications
  • Terminal and shell tooling
  • System configuration
  • Themes and shortcuts
  • A collection of developer-oriented software

The result is less like installing a completely empty operating system and more like receiving someone’s carefully assembled Linux workstation.

That’s the real idea behind Omarchy.

It isn’t trying to eliminate configuration. It’s trying to eliminate unnecessary configuration.

๐Ÿงฉ So What Makes Omarchy Different?

Arch Linux isn’t new.

Hyprland isn’t new.

Tiling window managers aren’t new.

And beautifully customized Linux desktops certainly aren’t new.

You can build essentially all of the individual pieces yourself.

What makes Omarchy interesting is how those pieces are curated and integrated into one coherent system.

Instead of spending hours configuring Hyprland, your terminal, application launcher, status bar, themes, shortcuts, notifications, and other desktop components individually, Omarchy provides a complete opinionated environment from the beginning.

Think of it as:

Arch Linux without starting from a blank canvas.

Or, perhaps more accurately:

Someone else’s carefully engineered Linux workstation โ€” which you are free to modify.

โŒจ๏ธ The Mouse Is Optional โ€” and That’s the Point

One of the biggest adjustments when moving to Omarchy is realizing that you don’t need to reach for the mouse nearly as often.

In fact, Omarchy’s workflow actively encourages keyboard-first computing.

Instead of clicking an application icon, dragging windows around, and constantly moving the mouse between different parts of the screen, many everyday actions are performed with keyboard shortcuts.

This is possible largely because Omarchy is built around Hyprland, a dynamic tiling Wayland compositor.

Windows are automatically arranged rather than simply floating wherever you place them. You can move between applications, change workspaces, resize windows, launch programs, and rearrange your desktop using keyboard commands.

The mouse still works.

It’s just no longer the center of the workflow.

If you’ve never used Linux terminology before, you might see Super mentioned in Omarchy’s documentation and wonder what it means.

The Super key is usually the key with the Windows logo:

On a Mac keyboard, it generally corresponds to the Command (โŒ˜) key when used with Linux.

Think of Super as Omarchy’s primary shortcut key.

Examples of common Omarchy shortcuts include:

The exact shortcuts can be customized and may change between Omarchy versions, but the philosophy remains the same:

Keep your hands on the keyboard and let the keyboard control the desktop.

๐Ÿง  Why Does This Matter?

At first, it can feel strange.

You’re used to:

  1. Move the mouse.
  2. Find an application.
  3. Click it.
  4. Find the window.
  5. Drag it into position.
  6. Click something else.
  7. Repeat.

Omarchy asks you to think differently.

You might instead:

  1. Press a shortcut.
  2. Type the application name.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Switch workspace with another shortcut.
  5. Continue working.

Once the shortcuts become muscle memory, the number of tiny interruptions starts to disappear.

This is particularly appealing to developers because much of the work is already keyboard-based. If you’re writing code, working in a terminal, navigating documentation, using Git, or managing containers, keeping your hands on the keyboard can feel much more natural than constantly switching between keyboard and mouse.

๐Ÿงฉ It’s More Than Just Keyboard Shortcuts

The interesting part isn’t simply that Omarchy has keyboard shortcuts.

Linux has had keyboard shortcuts forever.

The difference is that Omarchy builds much of the desktop experience around them.

The launcher, workspaces, window management, terminal access, application switching, and other functions are designed to work together as a keyboard-driven system.

You’re not simply using keyboard shortcuts to control a traditional desktop.

The keyboard becomes the primary way you navigate the desktop.

And once you get comfortable with it, you may find yourself reaching for the mouse less and less.

๐ŸŽจ Aesthetic Design With a Purpose

Omarchy isn’t minimalist simply because it has fewer applications.

In fact, it ships with a fairly extensive collection of software.

Its version of minimalism is more about coherence.

The desktop, terminal, launcher, notifications, themes, applications, and shortcuts are designed to feel like parts of the same system rather than independently configured components.

This is one area where Omarchy is genuinely distinctive.

There are countless Linux desktops that can be made beautiful.

Omarchy starts that way.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Arch Without the Usual Assembly Project

Arch Linux gives you enormous control, but that control can come with a significant amount of setup.

You can spend hours โ€” or days โ€” configuring a desktop exactly the way you want.

Omarchy takes a different approach.

It makes many of those decisions for you.

You still have Arch underneath.

You still have access to its package ecosystem.

You can still modify the configuration.

But you begin with a working, curated desktop rather than a blank workspace.

That is arguably Omarchy’s biggest selling point.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Running Omarchy on 12-Year-Old Hardware

One of the things that made me even more curious about Omarchy was the hardware I was running it on.

This isn’t a modern, high-end workstation.

I’m running Omarchy on a computer with a roughly 12-year-old Intel Core i7 processor and 12 GB of DDR3 RAM.

That’s old hardware by today’s standards.

And that’s part of the appeal.

A modern Linux desktop doesn’t necessarily need a brand-new CPU with 32 GB or 64 GB of RAM to feel usable. Omarchy’s lightweight, tiling approach means the desktop itself doesn’t spend its resources trying to maintain a traditional graphical environment full of unnecessary visual effects and background components.

That doesn’t mean Omarchy magically turns old hardware into a new computer. Applications still consume resources, and demanding workloads such as compiling large projects, running multiple containers, or using modern browsers can still push older hardware.

But for everyday desktop work, terminal sessions, coding, browsing, and experimenting with Linux, the experience can be surprisingly capable.

It also reinforces something I like about Linux in general:

You don’t always need new hardware to have an interesting computing experience.

Instead of throwing an old computer away because it no longer feels exciting with a conventional desktop environment, Omarchy gives it another purpose.

For me, that makes the experiment more interesting.

I’m not testing Omarchy on a brand-new machine with hardware that can brute-force its way through anything.

I’m testing it on a 12-year-old Core i7 with 12 GB of DDR3 RAM and seeing how far a carefully designed Linux environment can go.

๐Ÿ” What About Security?

This is where I would not describe Omarchy as a dedicated “security-first” Linux distribution.

It isn’t Kali Linux.

It isn’t Parrot OS.

It isn’t specifically designed around penetration testing or cybersecurity tooling.

Instead, Omarchy provides a modern Linux environment where an experienced user has considerable control over the system.

That makes it an interesting platform for security experimentation, development, containers, networking, and building isolated test environments.

Omarchy also incorporates security measures such as disk encryption and an enabled firewall in its default setup.

But the distinction matters:

Omarchy gives you a powerful environment for security work; security isn’t the primary reason Omarchy exists.

Its primary focus is a fast, keyboard-driven, aesthetically cohesive environment for developers and technically inclined users.

๐Ÿงช Everyday Development

This is where Omarchy starts to make a lot of sense.

Imagine a workstation where:

  • Your terminal is always one shortcut away.
  • Windows automatically arrange themselves.
  • Workspaces separate different tasks.
  • Your editor, browser, terminal, documentation, and other tools already share a consistent environment.
  • Configuration is accessible rather than hidden behind layers of GUI menus.
  • You can drop down into the underlying Arch system whenever you need to.

For someone comfortable with Linux and the command line, this can create a very efficient workflow.

And because it is still Linux underneath, you’re not locked into Omarchy’s choices.

You can change them.

๐Ÿง  The Philosophy: Opinionated Instead of Generic

This may be the most interesting thing about Omarchy.

Most mainstream operating systems try very hard to avoid telling you how you should work.

Omarchy does the opposite.

It says, essentially:

“Here’s how we think a modern Linux workstation should work. Try it.”

You might love those decisions.

You might hate them.

But there is value in having a coherent starting point.

This is also why Omarchy shouldn’t necessarily be compared with Ubuntu or Fedora as simply “another Linux distro.”

It’s closer to a curated computing philosophy packaged as a distribution.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป Who Is Omarchy For?

Omarchy makes the most sense for people who:

  • Are comfortable with Linux
  • Spend significant time developing software
  • Like keyboard-driven workflows
  • Enjoy tiling window managers
  • Want Arch without manually assembling every desktop component
  • Appreciate strong opinions and sensible defaults
  • Enjoy customizing their environment
  • Want a visually cohesive Linux desktop
  • Don’t mind learning a different workflow

It may be less appealing if you:

  • Prefer a traditional Windows-style desktop
  • Want maximum stability over experimentation
  • Don’t want to learn a tiling window manager
  • Prefer configuring everything yourself from scratch
  • Need a conventional enterprise Linux environment

๐Ÿ“ Final Thoughts

Omarchy isn’t revolutionary because it invented Arch, tiling window managers, or Linux customization.

It didn’t.

And that’s actually what makes it interesting.

The innovation is largely in the curation.

Someone took a collection of technologies that Linux enthusiasts have been assembling manually for years and turned them into a cohesive, opinionated desktop experience.

That’s a meaningful difference.

Omarchy is essentially saying:

You don’t need fewer choices. You need better defaults.

For a developer who has spent years moving between Windows, macOS, Linux, .NET, scripting, containers, and security tooling, that philosophy is compelling.

I’m not interested in Linux simply because it’s different.

I’m interested because I want to understand and control the machine I’m working on.

And that’s where Omarchy gets my attention.

It’s not Linux made simple.

It’s Linux with an opinion.
